Department of Genetics & Plant Breeding

The department of Genetics and Plant Breeding was functioning since 2016 as one of the major departments in Sri Krishnadevararaya College of Horticultural Sciences, Ananthapuram. The main objective of the department is to impart basic knowledge regarding various aspects of Genetics, Cytogenetics, Plant Breeding, Biotechnology, Seed Technology and their contribution towards crop improvement. The department is offering seven courses for BSc (Hons) Horticulture viz., GPBR 1.8.1 Principles of Genetics and Cytogenetics, GPBR 1.8.2 Principles of Plant Breeding, GPBR 2.8.1 Elementary Plant Biotechnology, GPBR 2.8.2 Breeding of Fruit and Plantation Crops, GPBR 3.8.1 Breeding of Vegetable, Tuber and Spice Crops, GPBR 3.8.2 Seed Production Certification of Vegetable, Tuber and Spice Crops and GPBR 3.8.3 Breeding and Seed production of Flower and Ornamental plants as per guidelines of Dr. YSR Horticultural University, Venkatramangudem, Andhra Pradesh. The department is maintaining two separate labs i.e Plant breeding and Seed Technology laboratory and Plant Biotechnology laboratory. Further each lab is sufficiently equipped with different instruments for carrying practical equipments of undergraduate programme. This department is giving more emphasis to improve technical and practical skills of students in the lab and to practice emasculation and crossing techniques of Fruit and Plantation, Flower and Ornamental and Vegetables and Spice Crops. In addition, the department also aims to update information to students regarding recently released varieties, research activities and significant accomplishments in Genetics and Plant Breeding.
